How many calories should my dog eat per day?+
Daily calorie needs use the DER formula: DER = RER × Factor, where RER = 70 × (weight kg)^0.75. Example for a 10kg intact dog: RER ≈ 394 kcal, DER = 394 × 1.8 ≈ 709 kcal/day. This changes based on age, activity level, and health status.
How do I know if my cat is drinking enough water?+
Cats need approximately 50-60ml of water per kg of body weight per day. A 4kg cat needs 200-240ml. If feeding dry kibble, ensure your cat drinks enough since dry food only contains ~10% moisture. Wet food can fulfill up to 75% of water needs.
How do I calculate daily kibble portions?+
Formula: Grams of kibble = (DER kcal ÷ food calorie density kcal/kg) × 1000. Example: DER = 700 kcal, food density 3500 kcal/kg → 700 ÷ 3500 × 1000 = 200g/day. Calorie density is usually listed on the packaging. Split into 2-3 smaller meals daily.
