Frequently Asked Questions — Cholesterol Level Checker
What is a normal total cholesterol level?+
Desirable: below 200 mg/dL. Borderline high: 200-239 mg/dL. High: 240 mg/dL and above. However, total cholesterol alone is less useful than the breakdown into LDL, HDL, and the TC:HDL ratio.
Can total cholesterol be too low?+
Very low total cholesterol (below 120 mg/dL) may be associated with malnutrition, liver disease, hyperthyroidism, or certain cancers. Below 130 mg/dL warrants investigation in adults.
Should I fast before a cholesterol test?+
Fasting 9-12 hours before a cholesterol panel provides the most accurate LDL and triglyceride results. However, non-fasting tests for total cholesterol and HDL are now accepted by many guidelines as equally valid for screening.
